Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door

Saturday, February 22nd, 2020

I’m getting a Rode NT1-A to mic my vocals for acoustic & singing videos. My SM58 will be used to mic the acoustic. I used the SM58 on the recording below. I thought I’d best do a Slash video given he’s my guitar hero!

Van Halen – Jump Solo (again)

Friday, February 21st, 2020

So I re-did this now as an actual VIDEO!

Here’s the audio:

Play With Me (video)

Thursday, February 20th, 2020

So my friends joked that when I did the “Jump” solo video, it could have been anybody playing because there was no actual video – only stills! So I recorded this when I got back tonight from work (notice the Bill & Ted t-shirt!). It’s not perfect but I don’t care – it’s good enough. And now my friends say I am good… at “finger-syncing” 😀

Ice 9 – Live in Bath

Monday, February 17th, 2020

Last video for a while….

Many moons ago I took part in a few of the International Guitar Festivals in Bath, UK. At one, I got to meet Paul Gilbert. I saw some really amazing players and worked with a great crew. At one, I took part in an advanced guitar class run by Jimi Savage, and had the chance to play Joe Satriani’s “Ice 9” to a crowd. There were 30+ guitarists on stage and we each had our parts to play. I was one of three lead guitarists. You can hear my guitar in the foreground throughout. The video stops shortly after three solos, the first of which is mine. Enjoy!

Paradise City

Sunday, February 16th, 2020

So last year I played Paradise City live with a bunch of good friends (in addition to some solo acoustic songs). Prior to doing this I had a shot against a backing track, the result of which is below. Unfortunately, the backing track ends too early but as ever, it’s all just a bit of fun.

Eugene’s Trick Bag

Sunday, February 16th, 2020

I found this old video of myself back in 2007 trying to play “Eugene’s Trick Bag” from the film Crossroads. It’s very poor lighting and there are some mistakes but it’s just an extra bit of media that you may enjoy. I might re-record this properly one day.

Oh and here’s the original….

Visited four music venues until the early hours this morning (!), fave being a rock joint in Edinburgh. It brought me back to some of the slightly heavier music I used to listen to and I felt right at home. It’s amazing how music can bring people together – there was a council worker just  finished his shift wearing an orange hi-vis coat, a guy in a kilt and his partner in a classy dress, scores of rockers and two couples up front doing jive dancing to heavy music – it was brilliant. Brought me back to the slightly heavier music I used to listen to – Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit, Alien Ant Farm, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Korn, Disturbed etc. A bit different from my typical 80s guitar rock!

–> Ace of Spades is definitely going on my set-list!

So it turns out Rage Against the Machine are touring again…. Prague or Poland look like good locations – two tickets incoming!

New Video – “Jump” Solo

Saturday, February 15th, 2020

So I decided to take a short break from learning all these acoustic songs. I thought I would crack out my electric and do a video like I used to. It’s nothing mega but here you go. I’m playing the Van Halen “Jump” solo on my Suhr through my Blackstar.

You can also find the audio-only here:

On another note, I watched “This Is the End” for the second time last night. Love that film. I’m doing a Backstreet Boys song as part of my acoustic set-list so I really found the end to this film funny… Enjoy…

G N’ R in …. Glasgow….

Saturday, February 1st, 2020

So G N’ R just announced that they are playing Scotland (where I live) but….. it’s in Glasgow. We were hoping for it to be Murrayfield (Edinburgh). Very disappointing. When there are also dates in Munich and Seville, I think I know where I’ll be going to see them again (last time was Madrid)!

In other news, only 4 more songs to go in order to round off my acoustic set-list! It’s really coming together, with a great mix of complex fingerstyle tunes & solos, loud chordal songs etc. I’m going to ease into it by doing a few open mic nights in and around Edinburgh.

I’ve been making some small modifications to bass lines on my album tracks, as well. Now that I’ve free weekends, the musical part of my life is kicking back into full gear and I love it.
